Can you feel it? The electric buzz of summer is here! Sunny beach days, sparkling waters, warm nights, there are so many things to love about these summer months. Okay, so if I’m being totally honest, I’m kind of always feeling the summer vibes because we get to live in San Diego (anyone down to join a petition to officially make summer last all year?!) and it’s one of my favorite times of year. Just consider me always having a sunshine state of mind. With girls getaways and family vacays on the agenda, I’ve gotten my packing down to a pro so I can have all of my travel must-haves ready to go and I can get to the fun stuff quicker. I see you, margaritas. Get ready to dive in—these are the summer travel essentials you can’t live without!
The Perfect Suit
Let’s get this out in the open first: we all deserve to feel confident and comfortable at the beach! So finding a bathing suit that has you feelin’ yourself is KEY. Whether it’s a bikini, one piece, high-waisted, or strappy, find what makes you feel like the absolute babe you are and rock it all summer long. For me, I love two-pieces in classic colors and cool patterns. They’re fun to mix and match so your look always feels new.
Sunscreen You’ll Actually Want to Put On
Hello!! This is a huge one for me, and should be a no brainer for all of us. It’s time to make sunscreen trendy! It took me way too long to realize the importance of applying (and more importantly—reapplying) sunscreen. Now, it’s a non-negotiable. Especially on those all-day beach days. You want to keep your skin protected and healthy, so the glow never fades. Also, throwing on a hat never hurts, either. I always make sure to have a sunscreen option for my body and a separate one just for my face.
Life-Saving Hair Products
Okay, maybe they don’t save lives, but they do save hair! Just like the sun is tough on your skin, the sun ain’t too friendly on hair, either! In my beach bag I always have Davines OI Oil, which gives an extra shine and softness to your hair, while also fighting frizz and tangles. Plus, it smells amazing! Another must-have is Moroccan Oil Dry Shampoo! This comes in light and dark tone options for a great refresher at the beach or to extend the life of your blow dry. Yes, please!
Hot Hair Tip: If you plan on swimming in a chlorinated pool, at minimum get your hair wet with regular water beforehand or, at best, coat your hair with a deep conditioner before you get in the pool. Both will help prevent fading and brassiness in blondes. After you swim, be sure to rinse out the chlorine ASAP!
There’s nothing better than laying out by the pool or by the beach with a great book in hand. Romance stories, page-turning thrillers, or, my favorite, motivational and memoir books—vacation reads are a must! Right now I’m loving Rachel Hollis’s “Girl, Stop Apologizing” and Lori Harder’s “A Tribe Called Bliss,” which I love to pick up and reread every now and then!
H2O All Day Every Day
Alright, so in this instance I’m not talking about the pool or the ocean (shocker), but instead, the water you drink! I could talk all day about the scientifically-proven benefits of staying hydrated (how much time do you have?!), but the main takeaway is this: your hydration will directly affect how you feel internally, how your skin looks, and you know, basic survival. Staying hydrated helps to maximize your physical performance, boosts energy, and improves brain function. When you’re out in the sun it’s so easy to get dehydrated without even realizing it—especially if you’re like me and like to have a cocktail or two on vacation! Carry a water bottle with you at all times, I like the ones that keep water ice cold even when it’s hot outside, and don’t forget to refill!
Cool sunnies are a must for me not only to protect my eyes from the sun, but also to complete an effortless summer look. I’m loving the Quay sunglasses, which come in a ton of different styles and colors depending on what your preference is, are great quality, and don’t break the bank like other brands. I’ll throw on my shades with a bold lip color for a minimal makeup look that makes a statement.
